Sergio Barrera

Thought and reflection, meditation and discovery. Sergio Barrera’s painting (Valencia, 1967) is unleashed from the anonymous gesture of the brushstroke, squeezing its own contradictions and historical conventions. Barrera calls it anti-gesture and confesses to developing a type of pictorial registry that synthesizes the essential constants of a brushstroke. All the spontaneity associated with the gesture is subverted in an indirect, cold and calculated process, with a fine brush.

Sergio Barrera’s work has been part of exhibitions at the Centro del Carme Cultura Contemporània, Bancaja Foundation (Valencia), Las Cigarreras Cultural Center, MACA Museum of Contemporary Art (Alicante) or Matadero Contemporary Creation Center (Madrid). of the IVAM Produce project of the IVAM Valencian Institute of Modern Art.
